In the first quarter of the year, Colombia's containerized cargo export volume, which includes banana exports, increased by 13.7% over the same period of the previous year. This increase was mainly driven by banana exports, which were 1.2 times higher than in the first quarter of 2023.
In the first quarter of 2024, there was a 9.6% increase in cargo volumes, both dry and refrigerated, compared to the same period of the previous year. This growth was led by refrigerated cargo, especially bananas, which increased by 18.8% over the first quarter of 2023, contributing significantly to the increase of Colombian exports.
Colombia's banana production is mainly concentrated in two regions: Urabá - Antioquia and Magdalena, which is reflected in the market shares achieved by the ports of Turbo and SMA (54% and 45%, respectively) in the refrigerated export of this fruit. Between 2023 and 2024, the port of Turbo increased its market share by four percentage points, from 49% to 53% in the first quarter of the current year.
