The onion harvest finished in April after a very dry growing season, but this has meant that quality is very good at Tasmanian grower Premium Fresh.
"One of our biggest challenges is shipping, due to the situation in the Red Sea, Tasmania suffered even more as we had trouble getting empty containers and of course there was extra cost which has to be shared," said Jim Ertler from the company.
"We had our first arrivals into Europe in mid-April, all of our sales there are contacted and prices are agreed beforehand. I'm hearing very mixed reports from Europe, some areas seem to have a good onion supply, while others are short and quality is mixed. There is a lot of rain just now in Europe, which could potentially impact next year's crop.
"We are starting to move containers into South East Asia now, but Australia doesn't send huge volumes there. The domestic market is ok, but nothing special at the moment."
Snackits.
Premium Fresh launched a snacking carrot kit last year which has been doing really well in the Australian retailers. "Early on we couldn't keep up with demand, we have now increased planting of the special snack carrot variety and are almost keeping up with demand. Once we have the Australian market covered, we will looking further afield."
