"Growing demand from small distilleries for Amalfi lemons"

In recent years, Gebr. de Mooij Amsterdam has significantly strengthened its position in the import of Amalfi lemons. These lemons come from the Amalfi Coast, where the mild Mediterranean climate and fertile soil give them their distinctive taste and thick peel. Amalfi lemons are highly sought after for their use in Limoncello. "These lemons have a thick peel, are untreated, and thus the peel can also be used for consumption," explains Robin Gillissen. Traditionally, the supply starts to pick up from December to January, becomes somewhat scarce in August, and from September/October, the new harvest begins to arrive.

"Our sales of Amalfi lemons are mainly directed towards vegetable shops and as decoration in fresh produce stores, where these lemons beautifully present with leaves in a wooden crate. Lately, we've seen an increase in demand for these lemons, particularly from smaller distilleries. Besides the large liquor manufacturers, there are more and more local companies launching their own branded limoncello on the market.
