In the first quarter of 2024, Peru exported 49,749 tons of onions, generating $23 million in revenues. The export volume decreased by 10% over the same period of the previous year but the export value increased by 29%, as the average price stood at $0.46 per kilogram, which means there was a 43% increase in revenues.
The Andean country expanded its presence to 19 markets, six more than last year. The United States, Spain, and Colombia were the main destinations, accounting for 84% of the total exported. The United States purchased 18,130 tons for $9.4 million, i.e. 61% more volume and 102% more value than in 2023. The average price paid by this market was $0.52 per kilogram, 25% higher than the previous year.
Spain was the second largest importer, acquiring 14,725 tons for $8.2 million. The export volume to this destination decreased by 5% but the export value grew by 11%, as the average price stood at $0.56 per kilogram and was 18% higher than in 2023.
Colombia imported 6,703 tons for $1.6 million, i.e. 67% less volume and 65% less value than in 2023. The average price paid by this market was $0.23 per kilogram, i.e. 7% higher than the year before.
