Panama canal updates maximum draft and transit numbers

The Panama Canal Authority has announced an increase in the maximum authorized draft to 45 feet, effective May 30, ahead of the previously planned date of June 15. This decision is attributed to the anticipated rainy season in the Panama Canal Watershed and the forecasted levels of Gatun Lake. The advisory specifies that the maximum draft for vessels using the Neopanamax locks will be set at 13.71 m (45.0 feet).

Furthermore, the daily transit numbers through the Panamax locks have been raised from 17 to 24 as of May 16. Starting June 1, the Neopanamax locks will see an increase in daily transits from 7 to 8, bringing the total daily vessel transits to 32. This adjustment coincides with Gatun and Alhajuela Lakes' water levels surpassing those recorded on the same date in 2023, marking a significant moment for the first time in 2024. The Panama Canal Authority continuously monitors meteorological conditions to adapt operational strategies in response to the watershed's increased inflows.
