Volumes of the Italian Gold kiwifruit variety Dori have been continuing to grow over the past few years in Australia, with a rapid increase expected in the coming years.
"The Victorian growing season has been generally pleasant and unexceptional. Western Australia has had quite a hot and dry summer, but the orchards are irrigated and covered with hail and shade netting, so the impact has been minimal," explains Jamie Craig, Director of Dori Australia.
"Our harvest commences in the first week of March each year, giving us a head start on the Zespri Sun Gold variety. Our volumes have almost doubled this year at around 260 tons, and we expect to exceed 400 tons next year.
"Demand in the domestic market was exceptional and was clearly driven by the quality of the crop. The variety matures with a strong and attractive gold coloured flesh and very high dry matter, which gives us an exceptional eating quality. We have had nothing but compliments regarding the fruit and its eating quality again this season and it is quite obvious that the variety has a very exciting future.
"The domestic demand was such that we really had little volume available for export, but we are aware of some air shipments did go to Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and to Qatar."
