Egypt reduces potato exports to Russia, domestic supplies expected to stabilize market

Egypt has reduced its potato exports to Russia, which has led to an increase in market prices. However, the situation is expected to improve soon with the appearance of new potatoes from domestic fields on the market, according to Alexey Krasilnikov, the executive director of the Potato Union.

Egypt traditionally supplied 300,000 to 500,000 tons of potatoes to Russia during May and June. This year, the reduction in these supplies has likely caused a shortage in the market.

Krasilnikov mentioned that early domestic potatoes from southern regions of Russia will begin to arrive within the next two weeks. Despite some regions reducing their potato planting areas compared to last year due to low profitability, many areas, including the Moscow region, have maintained their planting volumes. Therefore, there is no critical situation expected regarding potato availability.

He also noted that it is still too early to make harvest predictions, as planting activities across the country are currently in their final stages.

According to Rosstat, as of May 27, the price of potatoes in Russia has increased by 25.6% since the beginning of the month.
