Asaja Córdoba took part in the final session of the citrus board of the Chamber of Commerce's Lonja de Cítricos, thus putting an end to this year's campaign, which has been marked by a sharp decline in the demand due to the entry of Egyptian oranges, as well as a significant drop in the production throughout Spain due to drought and a reduced allocation of irrigation water last summer.
This last session served to carry out an analysis of the 2023-2024 campaign in the Vega del Guadalquivir, where the harvest is already coming to a close after a campaign with low production volumes.
Regarding the prices paid for the oranges at origin, both for fresh consumption and for processing, they were competitive in the first part of the campaign, but they plummeted unexpectedly in February due to the entry of oranges from outside the European Union, mainly from Egypt. "This has actually been one of the main reasons for the protests carried out by producers in recent months." There has been an increase in the volume of exports from third countries "without any reciprocity with the European Union in terms of labor and health standards."
For example, the final prices recorded by the Lonja de Cítricos for the Valencia Delta have oscillated between 0.22 and 0.25 €/kg, when last year they reached 0.46-0.50 €/kg. Also, 0.18-0.20€/kg have been paid for the oranges for processing, compared to the 0.30 €/kg recorded last year.
This has been the eighteenth consecutive year in which the citrus board of the Chamber of Commerce's Lonja de Cítricos has collaborated which Asaja Córdoba, providing reliable weekly prices both in the province and beyond and playing a fundamental role in providing transparency to a sector of vital importance in Córdoba, Spain's third most important province in terms of total citrus production and the second biggest orange producer in Andalusia, according to data from the Council of Agriculture.
Asaja appreciates the work and effort of the Chamber of Commerce of Córdoba and, especially, of the producers and agents who participate weekly in the sessions of the Lonja de Cítricos.
