More than 200 producers, technicians, marketers, and retailers from Huelva's strawberry sector attended the third edition of the Genetics Forum. The goal of this annual event organized by Planasa is to share knowledge about the behavior of its commercial varieties (RedSayra, Red Samantha, and Red Orizaba®) with the sector and address different issues, such as the health of the plant material from the nursery to the production fields, as well as marketing and consumption trends in the destination markets.
The event, led by journalist Mari Paz Díaz, began with a presentation in which the head of Planasa's Strawberry Improvement Program, Pedro Domínguez, and the head of Development analyzed the behavior of RedSayra and Red Samantha in a campaign marked by adverse weather conditions. They also offered management advice to avoid or alleviate the consequences of these conditions in both varieties.
Next, Douglas Rodríguez, head of Plant Health at Planasa, spoke about the processes and protocols the company implements to guarantee it delivers the strawberry plants in the best possible sanitary conditions. Among other issues, he addressed the prevention of diseases and their management in nurseries with different treatments, which are very interesting for self-reproduction nurseries.
Angel Bondía, retail data specialist and country manager of Dutch company Roamler, spoke about the strawberries' marketing and consumption trends in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands. He addressed consumer preferences, what the ideal strawberry looks like, where consumers prefer to buy them, and what motivates them to do so, among other issues.
Finally, Alfonso López, head of Product Launch at Planasa, spoke about the company's portfolio of commercial strawberry varieties. They complement each other allowing producers to offer strawberries throughout the entire production cycle entering different segments and market windows.
These events offer producers valuable content. Planasa shares the technical knowledge of their varieties, so producers can obtain maximum yields and gives them technical support by solving management doubts and problems that may arise before and during cultivation.
Complementary varietal portfolio
RedSayra®, Red Samantha®, and Red Orizaba® are three complementary varieties focused mainly on the Mediterranean climate markets, Spain, Morocco, and Italy. Planasa seeks to meet the needs of producers and importers by offering a quality product and a linear offer throughout the campaign.
RedSayra® stands out for its precocity and productivity. Red Samantha® is part of the premium seasonal fruit segment. These two short-day varieties are complemented by Red Orizaba® Plared 15105, a variety focused on the neutral day segment.
