Capitán Piña Panama S.A., with the support of ProPanamá, has shipped two containers with MD2 pineapples to Spain and the Netherlands. The company's trial shipment contained 3,360 boxes with approximately 23,500 pineapples. This shipment marks an important milestone, demonstrating Panama's ability to supply international markets. It also highlights the crucial role of participating in the Macfrut fair in Rimini, Italy, in promoting these agricultural products.
Eliécer Domínguez, CEO of Capitán Piña, highlighted the importance of adding value to pineapple production using the plants' leaf fibers in the textile industry, thus promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly production practices. In this context, ProPanamá and the FAO have presented studies focused on the opportunities of the pineapple, coffee, cocoa, and chocolate value chains, identifying them as key elements for the development and internationalization of Panama's agri-food sector.
Allan Ritter, director of International Promotion at ProPanamá, reiterated the importance of these advances and confirmed the entity's commitment to continue supporting Panamanian exporters. According to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI), between 2020 and April 2024, Panama exported 39,776,182 kilos of pineapples to the European Union for $20.6 million. The main EU destinations were Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Germany.
