With a production peak expected this week, the Strawberry Raspberry of France association is calling on consumers and retailers to support the sector.
Production peak in June
After a month of May marked by particularly unfavorable weather conditions for the ripening of French strawberries, with production levels down by 13% compared to 2023, the sector will experience a production peak in June. "We call on consumers to turn now more than ever to the French production, whose supply will increase considerably over the coming weeks," explains Emeline Vanespen, director of Strawberries Raspberries of France.
"Attractive" prices
"To encourage the French to buy, prices should be more attractive than last month. Within a week, the price of Gariguette strawberries in production has already fallen by 20%."
On the retail side, although Spanish strawberries are gradually giving way to Belgian produce on the shelves, mainly stone fruit and summer fruit are currently dominating the shelves. French growers are therefore urgently calling on retailers to make room for French strawberries in their stores, to enable them to sell the large volumes expected in the coming weeks. June looks set to be the ideal time to eat strawberries, with a wide choice of spring varieties such as the Gariguette and round strawberries. The season will then continue until October, but with less significant volumes.
On X, distribution specialist Olivier Dauvers posted a video in which he encourages strawberry consumption to support French producers.
