Asda has formed a partnership with Stewarts of Tayside, a Perthshire-based grower, to distribute 5.3 million Scottish strawberries across the UK for the Wimbledon fortnight. Stewarts of Tayside, run by Liam Stewart and his family, stands as Scotland's largest independent strawberry grower, maintaining a supply chain with Asda for over 25 years. The operation involves the cultivation, packaging, and distribution of strawberries directly from their Perthshire farms.
Liam Stewart commented on the partnership, highlighting the geographical advantages of their location along the river Tay, which contributes to the optimal ripening conditions for their strawberries. He emphasized the longstanding relationship with Asda and the collective effort to deliver superior strawberries to the consumers. Over the next six months, Stewarts of Tayside is set to provide Asda with more than 1,000 tonnes of strawberries, with a significant portion allocated for the Wimbledon fortnight.
Asda's Produce Buying Manager, Jake Halligan, noted the seasonal increase in demand for strawberries during the summer and the Wimbledon season. He acknowledged the contribution of Scottish growers like Stewarts of Tayside to meeting this demand, ensuring the freshness and quality of the strawberries available in stores.
