Issyk-Kul region expands cultivation of strawberries and taps into international markets

In recent years, residents of the Issyk-Kul region in Kyrgyzstan have increasingly turned to strawberry cultivation, significantly expanding the area dedicated to this crop. While strawberries previously occupied less than 100 hectares, this year they are being grown on 400 hectares. This expansion is attributed to high purchase prices and the profitability of this crop, attracting more and more local farmers.

Residents report that strawberries are sold both in the domestic market and exported to Russia and Kazakhstan. Depending on weather conditions, the price per kilogram of strawberries can range from $1.7 to $2.9, reaching up to $11.5 during certain periods.

Farmers emphasize the importance of thorough preparation for strawberry cultivation, starting with the selection of the plot and soil analysis to proper plant care. Mistakes during planting, such as incorrect hole depth, can lead to plant death. Experts advise using high-quality seedlings and modern technologies such as mulching film and drip irrigation, which help maintain optimal growing conditions for the berries.

Expenses for planting strawberries on one hectare can reach $23,000 to $29,000. However, by following all recommendations, these investments can pay off within one year. Special attention is given to reducing soil salinity and the correct application of fertilizers to provide plants with necessary nutrients during key growth periods.
