Shipments of pest-infested apricots intercepted in Russia

On June 10, the press service of the Ural Administration of Rosselkhoznadzor announced that 28 tons of apricots infested with quarantine pests had been delivered to the Chelyabinsk region. The infested produce has been directed for fumigation and is not permitted for sale.

The infestation was detected in nine batches of fruit. Three batches were found to be infested with the oriental fruit moth, while six batches were infested with quarantine species of scale insects.

From June 3 to June 9, the region received 141 batches of plant products, including more than 2,700 tons of fruits and vegetables and 38,000 cut flowers. Over 1.3 tons of fruits such as cherries, apples, kiwis, plums, cherries, apricots, peaches, and nectarines were inspected, as well as vegetables including tomatoes, onions, cabbage, peppers, carrots, beets, potatoes, and garlic. The exporters of these products were Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. Additionally, 22 tons of dry spices from Uzbekistan were delivered.

In the Orenburg region, more than 20 tons of apricots from Uzbekistan were found to be infested with the oriental fruit moth during inspection at a temporary storage warehouse. This pest is capable of destroying 50 to 100% of the harvest. The import of the infested apricots was banned, and the offenders were subjected to administrative penalties.
