Malda's mangoes and litchis set for European and Middle Eastern markets

Exporters from Kolkata and Mumbai are coordinating with the Malda district Horticulture department to source high-quality mangoes and litchis for the European and Middle Eastern markets. Mangoes from Malda are destined for London, while litchis will be exported to England, Bahrain, and Qatar. The initiative aims to meet the growing demand in these regions, promising increased revenue for local growers. Emphasis on organic cultivation is critical, as exports require fruits without pesticide residues.

Deputy Director of the district Horticulture department, Samanta Layek, mentioned that exporters have shown interest in Malda's litchis due to their quality and the region's substantial yield of over 16,000 tons. However, mango production has faced challenges due to adverse weather conditions. Jagatjyoti Sen, an exporter, plans to ship 3 to 5 tons of the Himsagar variety of mangoes daily to London. Ujjwal Saha, president of the Malda Mango Merchants Association, highlighted past export challenges due to high duties but remains optimistic about the current opportunity for exports to the UK, with an expected mango production of 150,000 tons in Malda.
