The escalation in berry prices in Russia, specifically raspberries, cherries, and strawberries, has been attributed to weather adversities, according to Yaroslav Abramov, Key Account Manager at Grodan. Currently, the market observes raspberry prices at 783 rubles per kilogram, cherries at 486 rubles, and strawberries at approximately 551 rubles, marking a 15-16 percent increase on a year-on-year basis. Abramov highlighted that adverse weather conditions, including spring frosts, have significantly reduced harvests, with some farms experiencing up to 90 percent losses.
In addition to frost damage, drought conditions in the southern regions have exacerbated the situation, with precipitation levels dropping to 60-80 percent of the norm and a 2-4 degree increase in minimum temperatures impacting strawberry yields. Despite early June predictions negating a berry shortage and attributing price hikes more to cultivation costs and foreign trade restrictions,
Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Patrushev, has assured that no abrupt price increases for berries and fruits are expected, with adjustments likely to be influenced by imports.
