Fashion label Balenciaga has unveiled a new version of its Triple S sneakers, utilizing Bananatex. This material, developed by Swiss company QWSTION, is derived from Abacá banana plants from the Philippine highlands. Bananatex is an eco-friendly, plastic-free canvas fabric, emphasizing sustainability in fashion.
The production of Bananatex, which took three years, aimed at creating a biodegradable alternative to synthetic fabrics. This initiative supports the circular economy by extending the product lifecycle and minimizing waste. Furthermore, the cultivation of Abacá banana plants contributes to the restoration of natural ecosystems, as these plants thrive without the need for chemical treatments or excessive water, offering a sustainable option in regions impacted by palm plantations.
