Rayalaseema region, Andhra Pradesh

Rise in orchard vandalism due to political rivalry

In the Rayalaseema region, known for its faction-related disputes, there has been a noticeable increase in the destruction of green orchards, attributed to political rivalries. A notable incident involved the burning of over 4,000 banana plants in Turakavaripalle, Tadimarri mandal, Satya Sai district, by individuals associated with opposition political factions. This act of arson destroyed the second harvest of bananas, poised to yield 40–45 tonnes, potentially generating revenue of Rs 800,000 (€8,800). The vandalism also inflicted substantial damage on the drip irrigation infrastructure.

The targeted banana orchard, spanning 3.70 acres, was cultivated by farmer Srinivasulu Naidu, who had successfully harvested the first crop and was preparing for the second. The police have initiated an investigation following a complaint from Naidu.

Additionally, in Mylasamudram village, Kothacheruvu mandal, Satya Sai district, approximately 155 sweet orange trees owned by YSRC leaders Prathap Reddy and Konda Reddy were destroyed by political adversaries. This incident saw the loss of trees both ready for harvest and those nearing maturity. Further exacerbating the situation, agricultural equipment was stolen from the orchard of local leader Narasimha Reddy. These incidents have prompted demands from farmers for decisive action against those responsible for the orchard vandalism, a trend that has seen a resurgence post-election.
