Price fluctuation in basic foodstuffs in Bulgaria's stock exchanges

In the recent report by the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Markets, there has been a noted adjustment in the prices of basic food commodities, vegetables, and fruits within the country's stock exchanges as of the last week of June. The market price index (MPI), a gauge for tracking wholesale food prices nationally, experienced a marginal elevation by 0.24 percent, reaching 2,053 points from the preceding week's 2,048 points, with the MPI's baseline set at 1,000 points since 2005.

Vegetables saw varied price movements; notable increases were observed in salad, which surged by 22.4 percent to a wholesale price of BGN 0.82 per piece, imported cucumbers at a 13.6 percent increase to BGN 2.50 per kilogram, and greenhouse cucumbers up by 12.6 percent to BGN 2.60 per kilogram. Additionally, potatoes and cabbage prices ascended by 8 percent and 4 percent, trading at BGN 1.22 and BGN 0.78 per kilogram, respectively. Conversely, greenhouse tomatoes experienced a 9.2 percent decline to BGN 2.36 per kilogram, with carrots, ripe onions (import), and ripe garlic prices also witnessing decreases.

Within the fruit category, cherries led the price increase at 12.3 percent, available at BGN 3.65 per kilogram, followed by imported apples and strawberries, which rose by 9.1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Prices for bananas and lemons slightly decreased by 0.4 percent each. The price of lentils remained stable, with no change from the previous week.
