Max van Ooijen, Tolpoort Vegetables

"Shortage of broccoli - cauliflower slightly more widely available"

While there was a severe scarcity of cauliflower in recent weeks, currently this vegetable has switched places with broccoli. "Due to the wet weather, hardly any broccoli was planted for 10 days. We are in that gap now. Last ten days the supply has been extremely tight," Max van Ooijen of Tolpoort Vegetables tells us.

"The demand for broccoli is sky-high. Even with the heat last week, consumption of broccoli was remarkably high. Fortunately, we can supply our regular customers well and in addition, we are currently shooting on all sides to meet the demand from the market. Qualitatively, we have no complaints either," Max continues.

"Cauliflower was also in short supply earlier this summer, but more supply of this has been released since the beginning of last week. That supply is still not wild, but there is a bit more available for the free market. Demand for exports is slowing down a bit now, but domestic sales continue to run well. However, growers are suffering enormously from game damage this year."

Tolpoort leads the Dutch market with cauliflower. "Dutch retail represents the bulk of our sales, but we also export to countries like Germany, Scandinavia and Italy, both with our own sales team and through exporters who have their networks in those countries."
