Prices of potatoes, tomatoes and onions surge in India

In India, the retail prices for key vegetables like tomato, onion, and potato have seen an uptick ranging from 15% to 58% over the past month. Despite this, the Union government has indicated that this shift is temporary, with expectations for stabilization in prices, barring potatoes. Correspondingly, the wholesale rates for these vegetables have escalated significantly within the same timeframe: tomatoes by 65.70%, onions by 35.36%, and potatoes by 17.57%.

As of the latest data, the national average retail price for tomatoes stood at ₹55.04 per kg, marking a substantial increase from the previous month's ₹34.73/kg. This 58.48% rise is monitored by the Price Monitoring Division of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry. Comparatively, last year, the price was recorded at ₹67.57/kg. Notably, by late July and early August 2023, tomato prices soared to ₹250 per kg in some regions.
