Old onions are still on offer in abundance, but Van Meir already drew a line under the old onion season two months ago. "We were offered junk then, and the good onions were still left by the farmers at that time. We then decided to stop and take time for maintenance and holidays and wait for the new harvest. I have absolutely no regrets about that either. After all, you don't do well for anyone in a falling market. Meanwhile, you can load old onions for 1 cent. That will give a bellyache here and there, but in my eyes some farmers have forgotten to sell their onions," says Leon van Meir.
"Meanwhile, the new onion set season has started and it is going reasonably well. Prices are at a stable level, around 40-45 cents in the bale, according to size. The supply is still limited, and it certainly won't be a top harvest this year either. There are many inferior plots among them. Therefore, not too much supply can be expected this season, although it is always difficult to predict," Leon continues. "But due to the dark days and wetness, yields are a lot lower on average. Some plots have also been planted far too late. There are some where they can take the plough to, but no doubt there are plenty of good plots in between. Ultimately, the question determines how the season will go. Now it is fine, but it is a matter of keeping the demand level even when the barns are full again."
