According to a report by Hortoinfo based on data from the Statistics Division of the United Nations Organization (UN), COMTRADE, in 2023 Guatemala became the world's leading melon exporter by volume, surpassing Spain, which had ranked first since 2015. However, Spain continues to rank first by export value, surpassing Mexico.
In 2023, world melon exports totaled 1,958.17 million kilos, 1,667.49 million euros, and an average price of 0.85 euros per kilo. Guatemala, Spain, Brazil, and Honduras accounted for 54.06% of the total export volume. Guatemala led exports with 352.14 million kilos. It was followed by Spain with 313.4 million, Brazil with 228.18 million, and Honduras with 165.2 million. Other prominent countries include the United States, Mexico, China, the Netherlands, Morocco, and Costa Rica.
Spain was the leading exporter by revenue with 291.65 million euros, followed by Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, and the Netherlands. In terms of prices per kilo in 2023, the Netherlands led with 1.42 euros, followed by Morocco and China. Spain ranked fifth with an average price of 0.93 euros per kilo.
Guatemala sent most of its melons to the US. The main destination markets for Spain, Brazil, and Honduras were several European countries and the US.
