Canadian potato producer enhances crop monitoring with HarvestEye technology

In a recent collaboration, HarvestEye has joined forces with G Visser & Sons, a leading potato grower in Prince Edward Island (PEI), to enhance the farm's ability to deliver top-quality produce to the North American market. The partnership involves the deployment of the HarvestEye system on one of the farm's packing lines to monitor the size, shape, and variability of potatoes, processing 500,000 pounds of produce weekly. This system aims to improve the grading process's quality control, complementing the manual sorting efforts.

HarvestEye provides a cost-effective solution for gaining insights into root crop harvests, including potatoes and onions, through an online portal. The system is versatile, fitting onto grading and harvest machinery, and is also available as a handheld device for in-field assessments.

Harry Tinson, general manager at HarvestEye, highlighted the value of working with G Visser & Sons, emphasizing the opportunity to understand the challenges faced by growers, packers, and processors in PEI and other North American potato growing regions. Adam Jay, chief operating officer at G Visser & Sons, expressed the company's intent to leverage HarvestEye for real-time monitoring, aiming to reduce the impact of human error and enhance product quality.

The partnership between HarvestEye and G Visser & Sons is expected to grow, with plans to extend the system's use across more operations. This expansion aims to maximize the return on investment by improving crop assessment and management practices. Vidyanath Gururajan, managing director of HarvestEye, noted the importance of PEI to the North American potato industry and the company's commitment to innovation and customer support through ongoing partnerships and distributor relationships.
