New deal for UK farmers announced by Defra secretary Steve Reed

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in the UK, under the new leadership of Secretary Steve Reed, has announced a commitment to revitalize the agricultural sector.

Following discussions with Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), Reed emphasized the government's plan to rejuvenate rural economies and enhance the nation's food security. The strategy includes measures to reduce energy expenses through GB Energy, safeguard farmers in trade agreements, and promote British produce through government procurement. Reed expressed an eagerness to collaborate with the NFU to support the agricultural community.

Bradshaw highlighted the significance of food security, investment in agriculture, and the need for more flexible planning policies as key discussion points with Reed. He welcomed the government's focus on food security, environmental sustainability, and flood management, underscoring the necessity for adequate funding to support these initiatives. The NFU aims to continue its engagement with Defra on various issues, including disease management, agricultural transition plans, and supply chain equity.
