Jongfresh honoured with visit by director general Afke van Rijn

"Graffiti radish is still a small item, but we can surprise our customers with it"

Although radishes are particularly well consumed on sunny days, Erik de Jong of Jongfresh is not at all dissatisfied with current radish sales. "Demand has actually gone through very well. After the midsummer celebrations in Scandinavia, we saw a small price dip for a while. But now the market has returned to a nice level."

"Climatically, we have had a very controlled spring, barring a few hot days. That has done wonders for the quality of the radishes. Consequently, customers are very appreciative," the radish grower continued. "The numbers are now at a good level. Moreover, it has been quite warm elsewhere in Europe, which was good for sales. In our sales, we now have sufficient spread to cope well with peaks and troughs in supply."

Vlnr: Renate NoƩ - Department Head Supervision & Enforcement ODH, Stefan Brandt - Policy Officer Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Annemarie Goudswaard - Executive Secretary/Strategic Advisor ODH, Menno van de Velde - Team Leader Space & Subsoil ODH, Christiaan van der Kamp - Director ODH, Afke van Rijn - Director General Environment and International Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management

Jongfresh supplies red, white, purple and white-tip radishes, lilac, and a range of combinations year-round. The latest specialty added to the range is the so-called graffiti radish. "We are constantly expanding to surprise our customers. This spotted graffiti radish is still a relatively small item, and we do produce too many yet, but we see a good demand from the market. We are first marketing this speciality within hospitality-related buyers. This is often a stepping stone for wholesalers and retailers to start working with these novelties."

On Wednesday, Jongfresh was honoured by a visit from Afke van Rijn, director general Environment and International at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. "We were very honoured by this visit to our company. She was very interested in how greenhouse horticulture is doing. Directorate ODH (Haaglanden Environment Service) had a consultation with Afke van Rijn at our location about the usefulness, necessity and functioning of the Licensing, Enforcement and Supervision system. After this consultation, I was given the opportunity to showcase our company and share my experiences and opinions on ODH and future concerns challenges regarding environment and energy."
