Nursery grower Uzi Cairo from Cairo & Doutcher, the exclusive Italian distributor of Eden plants, explains that it is possible to produce pears also taking advantage of the existing structures in vineyards.
"In Puglia in particular, there are many grape producers interested in diversifying their productions also due to the confusion on the varietal renewal underway. Entrepreneurs however want to limit the initial investment, especially because they do not believe they are qualified for pear production. We have recently conducted a new test on an existing crop equipped with 3 meter cement poles, adding Eden pear trees at the center between the rows and using the Guyot system - among the most popular in Italy for top fruit too - thanks to which it is possible to plant up to 4,000 plants/hectare, reaching yields of 20 kg/plant (80 ton/hectare). Trees can be grown up to a height of 2.5 m, thus making harvesting easier without resorting to specific means."

Harvesting operations will start in less than 50 days. "For the plants planted one year and a half ago, we are counting 15/20 fruits on average at the moment while, for trees that are now three years old, we preferred leaving 180/200 fruits following thinning operations. At the moment, the majority of these fruits have grades exceeding 50 mm: pears grow 3 mm a week on average, until they reach 70/75/80 mm from mid-August."
(Fruits with an ideal color and grade. Period: late August).
"We will illustrate the results obtained so far to visitors and during the third Field Days planned on August 22-24 of 2024, when pears from a row will be harvested and weighed to show how many kgs of Eden pears can be harvested from one hectare, three years after transplanting."
