Peru's lower pomegranate production has improved prices

The price of pomegranate, known for its nutritional properties and considered a superfood, has increased in international markets, especially in those with high incomes. Despite this favorable scenario, the Peruvian pomegranate has faced obstacles to capitalize on this trend. Traditionally concentrated in the first half of the year, Peru's pomegranate production initially experienced growth until it ranked 15th in the country's agro-export basket, along with products such as onions and quinoa. However, the weather setbacks of 2023 and the ongoing challenges in 2024 have put the progress made at risk.

Pomegranate production has been particularly affected by adverse weather events. The production volume fell and the campaign peaked earlier. As a result, producers' profit margins have decreased and many have migrated to more profitable crops, such as blueberries or grapes. This change has been especially noticeable in regions such as Ica and Arequipa.

The fall in production volumes has improved prices and producers who continue with the crop have achieved greater profits this year. Until May 2024, Peru shipped 29,946 tons of pomegranate, generating revenues of US$84 million. The export volume fell but there was a slight increase in value due to a significant increase in the price of the fruit.

Europe continues to be the main destination for Peruvian pomegranates. Spain was the main supplier for the entire continent. However, the Spanish production's inability to meet demand has opened opportunities for other countries such as India and China. Peruvian pomegranate shipments to Europe decreased. The drop, however, was partly offset by the increase in prices.

In the United States, the Peruvian pomegranate has experienced a smaller drop in volume and a notable increase in the value received, thanks to a price increase. Despite this, the US market is becoming increasingly competitive, with the entry of suppliers from various countries.

This panorama reflects the challenges and opportunities the Peruvian pomegranate faces in the global market, highlighting the need to adapt and improve production and export strategies to take advantage of the growing demand for superfoods.
