The monsoon season has adversely affected tomato crops in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, leading to a surge in prices within Chennai's markets. Initially, tomatoes were available at Rs 25 per kg at the Koyambedu wholesale market, with over 80 truckloads being delivered.
However, due to transportation challenges stemming from the intense rainfall in these states, there has been a disruption in supply. Consequently, wholesale prices escalated to Rs 40 per kg, and retail prices in Chennai soared to between Rs 80 and Rs 90 per kg. This price fluctuation occurred in a span of one week, illustrating the direct impact of weather conditions on agricultural produce availability and market prices.
