On 15 September, Fruchthof Berlin will celebrate its 75th anniversary. To mark the occasion, a large anniversary weekly market will be held on the wholesale market site. On the same day, the world's largest fruit salad will be produced with the help of 300 volunteers.
Since moving to the newly built Fruchthof-Halle on Beusselstraße in March 1965, the wholesale market has gradually developed. Today, around 100 market companies with a total of 2,000 employees handle around 220,000 tonnes of fresh produce and delicatessen every year.
The faces behind the Fruchthof. Clockwise: wholesale market boss Nils Doerwald, Thomas Fuhrmann from Dieter Fuhrmann GmbH, Mehmet Akpolat from GSM, and Andreas Lange from Keuthmann GmbH.
The idea of building a new, modern fruit market in Berlin on the site of the former Tegel airport has now been put to one side by the Fruchthof cooperative, as board spokesman Nils Doerwald explains. "We have agreed with the council to further develop this site." The result will not be the most modern wholesale centre in Europe, but a functioning site that will be successively renovated during ongoing operations. The halls are fully let and there is also a waiting list of interested parties, although it is not long, according to Doerwald.
