For the first time, British consumers will have the opportunity to purchase orange flesh watermelons, a sweeter variant compared to the traditional red flesh types, available exclusively at Tesco. This variety, cultivated in Spain, is a hybrid developed from ancient heirloom species. James Cackett, Tesco's fruit technical manager and a specialist in melon cultivation, has dedicated 18 years to collaborating with seed houses to introduce novel and uncommon melon varieties to the market.
Cackett: "Not only do the wonderful orange flesh watermelons taste fantastic, but they are also great showstoppers and are guaranteed to turn heads and be talking points when served at BBQs and garden parties. While the variety is not new, this is the first time that they have ever been commercially grown for sale in the UK."
Tesco has a history of pioneering in the melon category, previously introducing the Sweet Snowball and Finest Sunkiss varieties to UK shoppers. The retailer offers an extensive melon range, including Yellow Honeydew, Watermelon, and Cantaloupe, among others. Additionally, the UK has seen domestic production growth, with Oakley Farms producing a record 11,000 watermelons last year. The orange flesh watermelons will be priced at £4 and available in over 140 Tesco stores nationwide.
