Netherlands: Van Gog Kwekerijen acquires 32ha Wijnen Square Crops facility

Van Gog Kwekerijen will take over the Grubbenvorst site from Limburg-based Wijnen Square Crops on 1 December 2024. The site comprises 32 hectares of peppers and an adjacent 22 hectares of land ready for expansion. Director-owner Marion van Gog is also a co-shareholder of Germany's Wittenberg Gemüse. With this new acquisition, the group will expand to 110 hectares in the Netherlands and Germany, cultivating tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and peppers. The Wijnen Square Crops location in Egchel will remain under the ownership of Pieter Wijnen.

In search of expansion and sustainability
In recent years, Marion van Gog has been actively seeking opportunities for further business expansion, combined with sustainability. "With this acquisition, we are adding a company that is an excellent fit for us. It aligns with our sustainability plans, market development strategy, and innovative growing methods. Moreover, creating good working and living conditions for our employees is very important to us. We are therefore very happy and proud to add this beautiful company to our group and welcome its employees into our organization."

Van Gog Kwekerijen will continue its current operations with over 37 hectares of high-wire cucumbers, divided among the locations in Asten, Helmond, and Horst. Koen Saris will remain the operations manager at the new Van Gog location in Grubbenvorst, where operations will continue as usual. Pepper packaging and sales will remain with Harvest House.

Full of confidence
Director-owner Pieter Wijnen is confident that the company —which he and his brother Twan, along with their team of employees, built— is in good hands with Van Gog Kwekerijen. "At our location in Grubbenvorst, all facilities are available, with room for growth. Expansion of scale is necessary within the horticultural sector to create innovative and sustainable growing solutions for the future.

Personally, I no longer have the ambition to make another growth leap. I want to have more time for my family and focus on new challenges outside the sector. The acquisition by Van Gog Kwekerijen will certainly accelerate the development of this location, providing great opportunities for our employees to grow further within the company. I wish everyone the best of luck with that."
