Japanese honour Davao's banana pioneer Hikaru Miyake

On August 7, Hikaru "Mickey" Miyake was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, recognizing his efforts in enhancing Japan-Philippines relations. The award ceremony took place at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao, led by Consul General of Japan, Yoshihisa Ishikawa, and witnessed by Miyake's family, friends, and delegates from Japan-related entities in Mindanao.

Miyake, who settled in Davao in 1971, was instrumental in founding the region's banana export sector to Japan. In addition to his business achievements, Miyake has been an active leader within the Davao Japanese Association, serving as its president for 22 years, and played a key role in the creation of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Mindanao. His efforts have notably improved the welfare of the Filipino and Japanese communities in Davao.

Consul General Ishikawa commended Miyake for his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Miyake, in his acceptance speech, expressed his deep appreciation for the honour and vowed to continue working towards closer Japan-Philippines relations. The Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays is bestowed upon individuals for distinguished achievements in international relations, cultural promotion, and various professional fields.
