Only 30% of Ukrainian onion producers have access to professional storage facilities, which could lead to high prices by spring despite the current overproduction. This concern was highlighted in an interview by Andriy Marushchak, Commercial Director of Van Dijk Technics, a company specialising in professional solutions for storing and processing berries, fruits, and vegetables.
"This year, once again, we are witnessing an overproduction of onions. However, due to issues with electricity and the lack of high-quality storage facilities, onions could become very expensive by spring. Only 30% of growers have professional storage options," Marushchak emphasised.
According to him, 70% of producers rely on storage facilities with less energy-efficient equipment. These facilities can store the harvest for a limited period, allowing some producers to sell onions even in June.
"However, the losses during that period will be so significant that producers will face a tough decision: should they wait until June to sell onions at, for example, €0.33, or is it better to sell them in November at €0.18-0.20? This is where energy efficiency and storage quality come into play," Marushchak added.
