Ukraine: Kherson watermelon receives geographic indication status

The Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation (IP Office) has officially granted Geographic Indication (GI) status to the "Kherson Watermelon." This prestigious designation is reserved for watermelons cultivated in the sandy soils of the Tavria region, specifically within the Skadovsk, Kherson, and Kakhovka districts of the Kherson region, Ukraine.

Renowned for their high sugar content and firm, juicy flesh, Kherson Watermelons are distinct with their green skin patterned with pale green stripes. The flesh, which ranges from pink to deep red, is exceptionally crispy and flavourful, setting these watermelons apart as a unique product of the region.

Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Vitalii Kindrativ, emphasized the importance of this recognition: "The registration of Kherson Watermelon as a Geographic Indication is a significant milestone for our agricultural sector. This status symbolizes the resilience of Ukrainian farmers, who continue to work under the challenging conditions of war. The GI status enhances producers' competitiveness on both domestic and international markets and brings economic benefits to local communities."

The application for this GI status was submitted by the "Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers," whose members are currently defending their homeland against Russian forces.

Olena Orliuk, Director of the IP Office, added, "The Kherson Watermelon's recognition offers hope during these difficult times. This GI, along with other Ukrainian products, will be submitted to the EU for protection in European markets, ensuring that the world can soon enjoy this unique taste of Ukraine."
