In Latvia, the cultivation of watermelons and melons is increasingly becoming recognized among growers, with the production of watermelons weighing up to 15 kg now becoming more common in the country's climate. Emīls Nils Gaišprātis, a young cultivator, has successfully grown the Odisejs variety, reaching weights of about 15 kilograms, alongside the Zloto Wolicy variety, which can weigh up to three kilograms. Gaišprātis, who began his venture into watermelon cultivation at the age of ten, now manages three thousand plants over one hectare in Vilce, reporting a particularly fruitful harvest this season attributed to the warm weather conditions.
Andrejs Kondratjuks, another experienced grower in Latvia, echoes the success of this year's melon and watermelon yield, highlighting the suitability of hybrid varieties for the Latvian climate, which he believes contributes to a sweeter and more flavourful produce compared to those grown in southern countries. Both Gaišprātis and Kondratjuks note the favourable climatic conditions in Latvia for enhancing the sweetness and quality of the watermelons, suggesting that the contrast between warmer and cooler weather plays a significant role.
Despite the success stories, the cultivation of watermelons and melons in Latvia is not without its challenges, requiring a level of skill and experimentation for success. However, Kondratjuks points out the growing demand for local melons and watermelons in the Latvian market, indicating a potential for expansion among local growers. The encouragement for individuals with arable land to venture into melon and watermelon cultivation reflects a promising outlook for the sector in Latvia, underscoring the importance of adaptability and experimentation in agriculture.
