Brazil authorized to export avocados to Costa Rica

The Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) is pleased to announce that Costa Rica has authorized the export of Brazilian avocados to the Costa Rican market. This is the result of the joint work between Abrafrutas, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).

The Brazilian avocado market
Brazil is a major avocado producer and its production has been growing in recent years. The main producing states are São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Parana and Espirito Santo, which together account for a significant part of the national production. The opening of the Costa Rican market represents a valuable opportunity for Brazilian producers, who will be able to increase their exports and reach new consumers.

According to Abrafrutas, quality and health certifications are essential to gain access to international markets. The association ensures that the products comply with the strict standards required by importing countries, thus guaranteeing food safety and consumer trust. Abrafrutas has played a key role in supporting producers, helping them in meeting these standards and in obtaining the necessary certifications.

Growth prospects
Brazil's avocado production has been growing steadily in recent years. In 2022, the domestic production exceeded 338,000 tons, with prospects of continued growth due to increasing demand, both at home and abroad. In 2023, Brazil exported more than 26,000 tons of avocados, generating more than US$ 39 million in revenue. This growth has been driven by health trends and the high quality of the Brazilian fruit, which is highly appreciated by both national and international consumers.

"This is another important milestone for Brazilian fruit growing. We are committed to expanding our exports and delivering our quality products to many countries. We are very proud of the progress achieved. We believe that Costa Rica will be a promising market for our avocados, and we will continue to work to ensure that our producers are ready to meet this demand with the highest quality," says Eduardo Brandão, director of Abrafrutas.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, producers will not be able to export until six months after the regulation is published. This period, according to Abrafrutas, will be essential for producers to get ready and adapt their processes to meet the demands of the new market.

"We will continue to support growers in this process, ensuring that Brazil maintains its prominent position in the global scene. We are confident that this new market opening will contribute significantly to the sector's economic development and to the promotion of Brazilian avocados abroad," says the association's director.
