Preserving apple and pear harvests with nitrogen technology in Western Australia

At Eagleview Orchard in Kirup, Western Australia, Oxair has implemented nitrogen generation technology in controlled atmosphere coolrooms to preserve apple and pear harvests. The technology, which utilizes a nitrogen generator by Oxair, reduces the oxygen content within the coolroom, thereby slowing fruit respiration and retaining optimal freshness. The system, capable of producing 20M^3/hr at 99% nitrogen purity through membrane technology, is designed according to individual customer requirements, offering a natural preservation solution.

This approach to nitrogen generation, leveraging membrane technology, produces inert gas at low pressure, thus eliminating the risks associated with high-pressure gas cylinders and bulk cryogenic liquefied gas. It also offers cost benefits, with potential savings of up to 50% compared to traditional nitrogen supply methods. Strict atmospheric control is crucial for top fruits to remove ethylene, reduce respiration rates, and prevent fungal spore growth, ultimately enhancing harvest outcomes and extending fruit shelf life. Eagleview Orchard, having used a rented Oxair nitrogen generator for years, decided to invest in a permanent unit to continue achieving high-quality fruit production.

"The previous Oxair-built one we had on rental has been reliable for many years, so it made sense for us to invest in a permanent solution," stated Dianne Fogliani of Eagleview. The orchard, which has been producing fruit for forty years, aims to maintain the highest quality and freshness with Oxair's technology. The nitrogen supply currently supports approximately 700 cubic meters of storage space, with the purchased unit capable of efficiently running larger operations. Oxair engineer David Cheeseman remarked on the practicality and cost-effectiveness of membrane technology for fruit and vegetable preservation, highlighting the successful collaboration with Eagleview Orchard.
