Tightened EU control over food safety affects Vietnamese exports

The Vietnam SPS Office has communicated with various departments and associations regarding the EU's solicitation of opinions on revising the MRL of certain active substances. The EU's proposal includes a drastic reduction of the MRL for Zoxamide in lettuce, salads, and spinach, alongside adjustments for other substances such as Fenbuconazole, Penconazole, and Acetamiprid across different products. Zoxamide, a fungicide, is under scrutiny despite the US EPA's findings of no acute toxicity, with concerns over its potential as a skin and inhalation sensitizer.

Contrastingly, the EU plans to increase the MRL for Zoxamide in onion, garlic, and tomato, with a notable rise for tomatoes. The adjustments for Fenbuconazole and Penconazole would impose a minimal MRL for certain fruits and nuts, while proposed changes for Acetamiprid affect bananas and tomatoes. These changes, expected to be implemented by February 2025, necessitate Vietnam's compliance to maintain its standing in the EU market, a critical export destination. The EU has heightened inspection rates for Vietnamese imports, affecting key products like dragon fruit and chili.
