Northeast Thailand markets see an influx of Chinese produce

High-speed line through Laos benefits Chinese fruit and veg exporters

In Thailand's Northeast, markets are experiencing an influx of Chinese farm produce and consumer goods, transported through Laos by high-speed trains. This development is affecting local businesses, according to vendors. A visit to the Mae Kim Heng New Market in Nakhon Ratchasima's Muang district revealed a variety of Chinese agricultural products for sale. These items, including apples, grapes, pears, oranges, broccoli, cabbages, bell peppers, and mushrooms, arrive in Thailand from Laos within a day via the high-speed rail link with China. The packaging of these products ensures minimal damage during transit.

Local vendors find themselves compelled to stock Chinese produce due to its year-round availability and lower prices compared to local offerings. For instance, Sangad Saadmaroeng, a vendor, noted the cost advantage of Chinese king trumpet mushrooms, which she purchases at 10 baht per pack for resale. In Buri Ram's Muang district, the presence of cheaper Chinese goods, including household items and clothing, is attributed to an economic downturn, with consumers opting for these less expensive options despite their lower quality.
