Swiss plum harvest reaches peak with over 500 tons weekly

Switzerland is in the midst of its plum harvest season, with over 500 tons of plums being harvested weekly until 9 September, as announced by the fruit association. The harvest, which commenced in July, has now reached the stage for the "Fellenberg" variety, a well-known type of plum, to begin in mid-August.

While the harvest outlook appears favourable, challenges such as pests persist, posing threats to producers. The plum moth, in particular, has been identified as a significant concern. Its caterpillars bore into the plums, leading to premature ripening and fruit loss. Despite efforts to mitigate these effects, the fruit association notes that up to 30 percent of crop loss can be attributed to the plum moth.

Effective collaboration between producers and traders is deemed essential to successfully market the substantial volume of fruit harvested.
