Kurdistan Region successfully exports 600 tons of potatoes to Qamishlo and Hasakah

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has successfully exported 600 tons of potatoes to Qamishlo and Hasakah in Western Kurdistan. The export, which took place on August 19, 2024, was facilitated by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to support local agriculture, as stated by Bashar Moshir of K.H. Potato Investment and Export Company. The potatoes were transported from Duhok through the Pishkhabur gate in 25 trucks, highlighting the demand for KRG potatoes in Syria and Western Kurdistan.

This recent export follows a larger transaction in July 2024, where 5,000 tons were exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and builds on last year's exports totalling 13,000 tons to the UAE and Saudi Arabia. With projections indicating exports could exceed 25,000 tons to Gulf countries this year, the Kurdistan Region's potato production demonstrates significant growth, currently standing at over 800,000 tons annually. The Nawkuri plain in Bardarash district, Duhok province, is a major contributor, with more than 300,000 tons produced each year.

The region's commitment to agricultural development is evident in its production of approximately 30 potato varieties, recognized for their quality in the Middle East.
