The mango harvest season has begun in Alanya, Antalya province, southern Turkey. With its ideal climate, Alanya has seen a rise in mango production, with local consumers preferring domestic to imported fruits due to their exceptional taste and aroma. Currently, mango cultivation covers about 2,000 acres.
Tahir Göktepe, President of the Alanya Agricultural Chamber, noted that mango cultivation has adapted well, leading to steady production growth. "Varieties like Naomi and Keitt are particularly successful here. Although growing mangoes is demanding and costly, the results are promising," he said, highlighting the importance of careful pruning and maintenance.
Göktepe called for more support, including potential measures similar to those used for bananas, such as creating a "Mass Housing Fund" or customs duties to protect local farmers from imported mangoes.
The mango harvest in Alanya runs from August to January.
