"We grow coriander year-round with special attention to seed varieties for different times of year such as slow bolting seeds for the warmer months," explains Anthony De Ieso from Throndon Park Produce, near Adelaide.
Anthony sells an average of 10,000 bunches a week, this number fluctuates depending on demand and availability. "We grow the coriander in open fields, hence the need to pay attention to weather patterns and seed varieties. This year has been very favourable; coriander is a quick turnaround from seed to harvest. Wet weather conditions can make planting schedules hard to keep, so this mild winter has provided us with good planting conditions."
"Coriander takes 6-12 weeks from seed to harvest. The warmer weather and longer daylight hours will speed things up, when it's the coldest and darkest, that's when we will see those slower growth times."
"Our coriander is fairly popular with supermarket suppliers, but we do still sell a fair bit to wholesale supply. It is a very popular herb here in Australia and is one of those crops that is used in popular take away dishes in winter as well as summer, Pho in winter and Banh Mi in summer."
