The mango season has just started in Malaga with the first harvests and sales. This year, the supply will once again be limited due to the impact of adverse weather conditions.
"It is estimated that the production is even smaller than last year's, between 70 and 80% below its potential," says Sigfrido Molina, manager of the Malaga-based company Sigfrido Fruit, "The markets are welcoming this seasonal product, but it is once again fetching very high prices this year due to its limited supply."
According to the mango and avocado grower and marketer, Malaga's climate parameters are changing and this has been resulting in campaigns with very low yields in recent years, both for tropical and other crops.
"We have very few hours of cold at night, when the crop needs them, and adverse weather conditions at the time of the fruit set. We are getting warmer winters than usual and then unusually cold weather in spring," he says.
Prices are high, but they will not be enough to make up for the low volumes. Also, employment in the fields and packing houses will fall and there will also be a negative impact on the ancillary industry.
Many operators are resorting to imports from third countries to fill the gap in Spain, especially from Brazil and Egypt. "We only work with home-grown and locally grown mango," says Sigfrido. "We are brand-oriented, so we work hard to obtain fruit with a good size and colour. We work mainly in wholesale markets, as well as in some supermarkets, mainly in Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands."
"This year, given the circumstances, we are going to focus on the clients we already have, and who have remained loyal to our brand every year because of its reputation and prestige."
The company will once again be exhibiting at Fruit Attraction from October 8 to 10 in Madrid, where it will be presenting its new organic mango range. Sigfrido will be delighted to welcome visitors to stand 9B15, hall P09.
