Saudi Arabia has reported an annual grape production exceeding 110,500 tonnes, marking a self-sufficiency rate of 58 percent, as announced by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The cultivation of grapes spans over 4,720 hectares across the kingdom, with Tabuk emerging as the leading grape-producing region, contributing 46,939 tonnes annually. Other regions such as Qassim, Hail, and Asir also play a significant role in the production figures.
The ministry's report underlines the economic viability of grape cultivation, noting its low water and soil requirements, alongside the crop's adaptability to the Saudi climate. Highlighting the nutritional value of grapes, the report points to their role in cancer prevention and immunity enhancement. The ministry's ongoing campaign aims to bolster local fruit consumption, enhance fruit quality, and support farmers towards achieving better financial outcomes.
Through initiatives aimed at increasing local fruit production, improving quality and safety standards, and refining marketing strategies, the ministry seeks to empower local agricultural producers.
