Southern Russia might start seeing apples with irregular shapes, discolouration, and skin imperfections, being sold as 'economy' fruits, due to a shortage of high-quality apples. Normally, these apples are used for making juices and purees, but this year, they might be sold directly to consumers.
Irina Kozii, Director of the Russian Berry Producers and Processors Association "Yagodny Soyuz" and Head of FruitNews, noted that this year's apple crop has suffered from May frosts, leading to an excess of 2nd class apples. As a result, these lower-quality apples could be marketed as economic options.
Additionally, Russia relies on imports for apple juice concentrates, with 50% coming from countries like China. Domestic supply is expected to be even lower this year.
In the Krasnodar region, apple yields are significantly below expectations. Nikolai Shcherbakov, Director of "Sadovody Kubani," estimates a 10% shortfall, which could drive apple prices up by about 13%.
North Korea has shown interest in filling the gap left by the domestic shortfall, though it's unclear when these apples will reach Russian stores. For now, imports primarily come from Turkey, South Africa, Serbia, China, and Uzbekistan.
