Selstar® has been successfully cultivated by selected fruit farms in the Altes Land region in Germany for several years now. The fruit ripens here under the influence of the mild, humid North Sea climate. The apple not only impresses with its balanced sugar-acid ratio, but above all with its high selenium content. Selstar contains around 17 micrograms of selenium per 100 grams. Eating one apple therefore covers around half of an adult's daily selenium requirement.
The German Nutrition Society recommends a daily intake of 60 micrograms of selenium for women and 70 micrograms of selenium for men. Breastfeeding women have a daily requirement of 75 micrograms of selenium. According to researchers, regular consumption of a Selstar apple not only contributes to a varied and balanced diet, but has also been proven to strengthen the immune system. "Selstar is therefore the first and so far only apple in Germany that can be labelled with health claims such as 'rich in selenium' and 'contributes to the normal function of the immune system'," explains Prof. Dr. Diemo Daum from Osnabrück University.
On the right: Selstar was developed as part of a research project at Osnabrück University funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2016 to 2019. The research team, led by Prof. Dr Diemo Daum, advises fruit growers on the production of the selenium-rich apple and carries out regular sampling and analyses.
Cultivation and marketing
Special selections of the popular Elstar apple variety are used for the Selstar cultivation. These apple varieties can be recognised by their typical bright red colouring. This is due to plant substances from the anthocyanin group, which are particularly abundant in the skin of the apple. Selstar® is produced in an environmentally friendly way in the Altes Land region and packaged in a natural cardboard tray without plastic. The apples are subject to comprehensive quality controls during cultivation and harvesting to ensure that every apple is a healthy treat. Issues such as biodiversity and natural plant protection also play a key role in cultivation.
The exclusive marketing partner is Ehlers, a family-run fruit growing and trading company in the heart of the Altes Land region. The company's many years of experience in marketing top fruit and its broad network make it possible to offer Selstar of a very high quality across Germany. Selstar apples can be purchased throughout Germany via the Obstland Ehlers online shop as well as via selected retail partners. "The first apples from this year's harvest will be marketed from the beginning of September. However, both private and commercial customers can already pre-order new harvest apples," says the exclusive marketer.
