The plum harvest in northern Moldova is in full swing. Farmers are harvesting this season's crop, with most of it destined for export. However, due to the heat and severe drought, farmers report that the yield will be modest.
Constantin Andriuță, a farmer from Soroca District, is harvesting plums from eight hectares. He reports a strong yield from one variety, exporting 40 tons from two hectares, though the heat has reduced the quality of another variety.
His total harvest is expected to reach 150 tons, all for export to Serbia.
Iurie Fală, Executive Director of the Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters, notes that the plum season is just beginning. Most plums will be exported, with some processed into dried plums, totalling about 15,000 tons annually. The harvest is estimated at 90,000 tons, but the lack of irrigation is impacting yields.
Moldovan farmers are focused on sorting and storing harvested plums in refrigerated conditions to maintain quality for international export.
