The volume of avocado exports from Kenya to China has seen a decrease of 80 percent this year, as exporters turned their focus towards markets in Europe and North America. According to Chinese customs data, the import volume of Kenyan avocados by China was recorded at 742,934 kilograms in the first seven months of the year, a decrease from the 3,674,463 kilograms imported in the corresponding period the previous year. Consequently, the revenue generated by Kenyan avocado exporters from the Chinese market fell to $1,232,149 from $6,830,140 during the seven months of last year. Despite China accounting for a small fraction of Kenya's avocado market, exporters have viewed the country's large population as a potential avenue for sales growth and a means to diversify away from dependence on the European Union.
